Supertrend, Drawn Out
If you've read the ATR lesson you already know half of Supertrend. Its raw material is ATR, and its central move is the same ratchet a trailing stop uses.
One thing differs. A trailing stop closes the trade when price reaches it and that's the end. Supertrend crosses to the other side of price and keeps going — it isn't a way out, it's a trend reading that keeps updating.
The charts use the same window as the earlier lessons.
1. Two bands, only one drawn
Start with the midpoint between each bar's high and low, then place bands a multiple of ATR above and below it. So far that's the same construction as any other ATR channel.
What makes Supertrend different is that it doesn't draw both. While the reading is bullish it plots only the lower band; while bearish, only the upper one. There's always exactly one line on the chart, and which side of price it sits on *is* the trend reading.
Each bar has a midpoint between its high and low, and bands 3 ATR either side of it using a 10-period ATR. Supertrend draws only one of them.

09/05: the line is sitting below price (bullish)

The dashed lines are both computed bands; the solid line is whichever one is actually in use.
2. The ratchet: the line only moves toward price
Here's the mechanism. While the reading is bullish, the lower band is only ever allowed to rise. If this bar's freshly computed band comes out lower than the previous one, it's ignored and the previous level holds.
That's exactly the behavior from the ATR trailing stop. And the clamp is what gives the flip meaning — if the line could loosen on every quiet bar, price would rarely reach it, and reaching it wouldn't say much.
While the trend holds, the line is only ever allowed to move closer to price — never further away.

- Band without the ratchet
- Supertrend line
The dashed line is the raw band, recomputed from each bar's own midpoint. The solid line is what Supertrend actually uses: the same band, but forbidden to retreat. Without that clamp the line would loosen on every quiet bar and the flip would lose its meaning.

The dashed line is the raw band with no ratchet. Watch the solid line refuse to follow it back down.
3. The flip
When a close finishes through the line, the line jumps to the other side of price. What was below becomes above, and the reading turns from bullish to bearish.
At default settings these are rarer than you might expect.
When a close finishes through the line, the line jumps to the other side of price and the trend reading reverses.

A marker lands at each flip. Count how many there are across the whole window.
The bullish flip in this window lands on 17 August.
That's the same bar as the golden cross in the Moving Averages lesson and the entry in the ATR lesson, and one after the Bollinger squeeze breaks. Five different indicators, each flagging one market event in its own vocabulary.
4. The multiple does most of the work
Supertrend has two settings, but the multiple usually decides the outcome. The period controls how smooth the underlying ATR is; the multiple controls how far from price the line sits.
The multiple does most of the work here. Watch the flip count as you move it.

At period 10, ×3.0: 4 flips across this window.

Move the multiple and watch the flip count below. It responds far more sharply than the period does.
5. What a tight setting costs
A smaller multiple puts the line close to price, so flips come sooner. They also come from ordinary noise — and a flip isn't a small adjustment, it's the entire trend reading reversing.
The same indicator at two settings, on the same data.
- Price (close)
- Supertrend line
At period 14, ×1.5: 11 flips in this window, the tightest run being 4 within 30 bars around 08/23. Each flip is a full reversal of the trend reading, not a nudge.

Toggle between the two. The highlighted stretch is wherever flips bunch up tightest.
6. In a long-only system, bearish means flat
Supertrend has no neutral state. Once it has a first value it is always either bullish or bearish, with nothing in between.
In a two-sided system the bearish reading would mean go short. 5PM Worker is long-only, so here it simply means hold nothing and wait.
Supertrend is never neutral — it's always on one side. In a long-only system the bearish side isn't a short, it's sitting out.
- Price (close)
- Holding (bullish)
- Supertrend line
141 bars bullish, 49 bearish — so a long-only system following this line would be out of the market about 26% of the window. Its longest holding stretch ran 08/17 to 09/02 (95 bars, price 20.7%).
BTC/USDT · 4h · Binance · 2026-08-03 → 2026-09-05
Shaded stretches are when a long-only system would be holding; the rest is time spent out of the market.
7. Common misreadings
- Supertrend isn't a new measurement — it's ATR bands plus a ratchet and a flip rule.
- The line never retreats. While a trend holds it only tightens toward price.
- A flip confirms rather than predicts. It happens after a close has already gone through the line.
- A smaller multiple is more sensitive, not more accurate.
- There's no neutral reading. Even in a directionless stretch Supertrend points somewhere.
- In a long-only system the bearish side is sitting out, not selling short.
8. Seeing it run in the Simulator
Supertrend appears in the Simulator in two roles: a template that trades its flips directly, and an optional filter that restricts another strategy's entries to when Supertrend reads bullish.
To compare period and multiple combinations rather than guess, the Sweep tool runs a real backtest across every combination in the ranges you pick and ranks them.
- Supertrend — trades the flips of the Supertrend line directly.
- Supertrend direction filter — an optional gate restricting another strategy's entries to when Supertrend reads bullish.
